MUSIC 15TH JANUARY 2021 MUSINTERVIEW
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SINGER/ SONGWRITER JARRED JAMES "UTOPIA"
interview conducted by Alexa Adams, musinterview!
every year, we ask one chart- toppering singer an important question- "how much is a loaf of bread?" in order to determine whether their success and wealth has gotten to them. after doing this for 15 years, having asked artists such as katty perry, kanye and blackbear, a correct answer still awaits...
This year we ask jarred james, most commonly known by the stage name "UTOPIA" alongside
jarred: lets go for it
an un-stripping and honest interview to learn about how he came to became a singer-songwriter, his creative process and how he got signed by warner bros records
alexa: today, i am lucky enough to get a chat with one of the biggest singers of our decade! Now, Jarred, are you ready to give your fans an insight into your exciting life?
did you ever see it possible being in the position you are now?
jarred: I had no idea! I'm still convinced this is all a dream, one day ill just open my eyes and ill be back home living with my mum where only she and my friends would know my name. It crazy and i am beyond lucky. Never in a million years would i have thought my dream would come true.
alexa: what do your friends and family think of all of this?
jarred: my mum, from day one has supported me. she has attended every concert, every meet and greet and she is due to come to tour with my next year. Lets hope COVID doesn't ruin that. she has kept me going. big shoutout to my mum if she is reading this! as for my friends, both Max and Jade have stuck by me from when I was in year 4 up until now which is a hell of a long time.
now for the cheesiest interview question- who inspired you?
jarred: i was expecting this one *laughs* well i think a mixture of rex orange county, frank ocean and lana del rey. they are very dissimilar from one another and each of them have inspired me in a different way- rex orange county has inspired the beat and style, frank ocean has inspired the overall mood and genre and lana del rey has helped me with lyrics massively. I owe it to these artists and without them, i wouldn't be in the fortunate place i am creating music.
alexa: those are amazing artists! have you met them?
jarred: yes actually i have and they say they are each big fans of me which blows my mind
alexa: *laughs* i'm sure it does!

how would you describe yourself in the most honest way possible?
jarred: i see myself as someone who makes a lot of mistakes in life but in a way, i think my ability to learn and grow stronger and come back better is my favourite thing about myself. I see the past as the past but i don't live in it. I accept it and move on. Aside from that, i like to say im down-to-earth
alexa: that's a great thing to say, i think having that sort of approach is much better than beating yourself up about the past! most artists describe themselves as funny and so it shocks me you didn't include that in your description
jarred: i am funny
alexa: *laughs* i knew you'd say that.
your latest single is weekend- can you tell us the message behind it? and why you wrote it?
jarred: so 'weekend' was produced in one day- it was a day i felt reflective and keen to look back on my past. although i had mentioned my struggles subtly in previous songs, i wanted to have one song that covered it all. it showed those listening that not everybody is perfect. my past especially is not perfect. i abused drugs and alcohol and by doing this i abused myself. i went through a lot and i was not doing okay. Like the song mentions in the chorus 'I'll be good by the weekend' reflects how during the weekend, i was partying, doing drugs and drinking and i was happy doing this. i would always look forward to the weekend because i knew it was a reason to not be sober and actually have 'fun'. during the week days, however, i hated it. i was alone, suffering a hangover, being unable to get out of bed and not feeling okay to go to work. i wouldn't do anything, all i would think about was how "ill be good by the weekend". i was suffering from depression, my therapist told me. And so i decided to do something about this. i got help- i went to rehab, made a new group of friends, continued counselling, used music as my main coping mechanism and i was getting better. I was starting to enjoy life for what it really was and it was an amazing feeling. The journey to get there, where i am now, was so difficult but definitely worth it.
alexa: that is so inspiring and i am happy you are no longer in that place, i do hope the song helps guide others who found themselves in a similar situation
HOW MUCH IS A LOAF OF BREAD?
alexa: okay jarred, now is the time to determine how rich you are with just one question- how much is the average loaf of bread in the UK?
jarred: if i'm honest, i never look at the price tag when buying a loaf of bread. and to be even more honest, i can't remember the last time i bought a loaf of bread. uhhhhhh my guess is £2.50? i don't know if that's too much or too little but its a guess.
alexa: that must be a good organic loaf of bread if you're paying that much for it. not even waitrose charge that much. sorry, jarred you're wrong, are we are still yet to find a celebrity with the correct answer. thank you very much for giving me a chance to chat with you!
